The International Red Cross launched an emergency appeal for 12 million Swiss francs ($9.85 million) on Saturday after an earthquake in Indonesia, which killed more than 3,000 people.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in a statement on its Web site that the magnitude 6.2 quake had made some 200,000 people homeless.
The quake around the central Java city of Yogyakarta buried many under the rubble of their homes.
