On the occasion of her 77th birthday last week, singer Lata Mangeshkar launched her own signature collection of premium diamond jewellery. She was especially excited to see Rekha’s reaction to her earrings. “I don’t like celebrating my birthday and normally run away to some hotel or go to Solapur or Nagpur,” she said.

On the recent trend of remaking films, the veteran singer insists that remaking Sholay (as Ram Gopal Varma is doing) is a big mistake. Of the new films, she “loved Munnab hai MMBS” and would love to watch Lage Raho Munnabhai.

“I really enjoy watching Arshad Warsi on the big screen,” she says. Of the current crop of singers she gives her thumbs up to Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Suresh Wadkar, Adnan Sami and Kunal Ganjawala.

Her future projects include a new album titled Swaranjali. It will have original ghazals composed by her protégé Mayuresh Pai with whom she had worked on an album of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s poems.
