POLICE ON Monday arrested retired senior administrative official of the Information Department Surendra Nath Chowdhary for killing his wife Kala on November 17 in Shaktinagar.

He revealed that his wife would ask many questions about his extra marital affair with his neighbour and that led to the murder.
It may be recalled that on November 17 he told the Gazipur police that he found his wife murdered after he returned from his morning walk. Surendra had also told the police that the assailants had also taken away Rs 15,000 cash besides jewellery and other valuables.
However, the cops got suspicious when the postmortem examination report did not corroborate Surendra’s claim that his wife was murdered a couple of hours after she had taken food. “The postmortem report indicated that she died much later than what Surendra claimed. Rigor mortis had set in. Further, the cops who investigated the scene of crime on the day of the incident did not find any sign of struggle after inspecting Kala’s body,” SSP GK Goswami said. On this basis the cops interrogated Surendra who later confessed to his crime.
Surendra told the cops that his wife entered into an altercation with him and charged that he was not paying due attention to her failing health. Surendra claimed that his wife subsequently in a fit of rage charged at him with a knife. The accused claimed that he slapped his wife and as the latter fell on the bed, he strangled her to death.
Then, to divert attention, Surendra reportedly tied Kala’s hands and ransacked his entire house. The accused said that he hid Rs 15,000 and removed jewellery and other valuables to make it appear like a case of loot and murder.
SSP said that though Surendra claimed that he murdered his wife in a fit of anger, police investigations have revealed that the murder took place because Kala was upset with Surendra’s involvement with another woman in the neighbourhood. Police have also recovered Rs 15,000 and jewellery and valuables worth Rs 2 lakhs that Surendra had hidden.
