TWO INCIDENTS of student rowdiness on Monday made the Lucknow University authorities literally sit up and decide that enough is enough.
First, the students showered filthy abuses at V-C RP Singh at his residence. After that they dared the V-C to suspend them if he could. Leading from the front was Ram Singh Rana, whose arrogance, according to the LU administration, was crossing all limits with each passing day.
In the second incident, a group of students tore question papers and answer sheets of the ongoing PG entrance test, forcing the LU administration to call an emergency meeting of top officials.
The end result: From now on, candidates seeking admission in various classes of LU will have to produce police verification certificates from their respective local thanas.
This LU move, however, invited immediate apprehensions. When contacted SSP GK Goswami told this newspaper that they did not have adequate resources of carrying out police verification of all the 30,000 students studying on the campus. “What we can do instead is handle specific cases forwarded by the LU. But under no circumstances we can verify all the candidates,” he said.
Also, the LU decided to purge its hostels of criminal elements. Proctor AN Singh in an official communiqué stated that illegal occupants of the hostels were required to vacate hostels immediately. The varsity is of the view that its hostels are a safe heaven for students with criminal antecedent.
The Lucknow University also resolved that candidates having criminal background would be expelled from the university. This is, however, not for the first time that the varsity has taken a decision of this sort. Even in the past similar exercise was carried out but it could not be enforced effectively after protest from the student leaders.
Interestingly, there are scores of student leaders currently studying in LU who have criminal records —right from murder to attempt to murder and even extortion.
