?RJD does not have my match?
George Fernandes, NDA convenor and Defence Minister who is fighting election from Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha seat, tells Khwaja Jamal that the leaders of the NDA are unanimous on overthrowing the incompetent Rabri government and impose president’s rule in the state at the earliest
Why did you desert Nalanda parliamentary constituency for Muzaffarpur?
I took the decision to leave Nalanda with a heavy heart. Electorate of both Nalanda and Muzaffarpur are equally dear to me. A group of partymen from Muzaffarpur put tremendous pressure on me to contest election from the Muzaffarpur constituency for the larger interests of the development of the region.
Do you have any difference with railway minister Nitish Kumar?
No. I don’t nurse any ill feeling for Nitish Kumar. Such canards have been spread by the vested interests to reap political mileage in the forthcoming election.
What is the future of JD (U), which has fielded 24 candidates in the state? My party men and I have learnt a lot from our previous mistakes. Integration of the party men has increased manifold in the urban and rural areas. We are all set to cross the earlier tally.
It is generally being said that the RJD has fielded a weak and dummy candidate against you in Muzaffarpur apparently to appease you? Comment.
It’s a white lie and absurd. There is no question of making peace with the RJD at the cost of destruction of the state witnessed during the Laloo-Rabri regime. In fact, the RJD does not have a towering personality to field against me.
What are your plans regarding the state government?
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will not wait for the outcome of the assembly elections. All the leaders of the NDA are unanimous on overthrowing the incompetent government and impose president rule in the state at the earliest. The Rajya Sabha arithmetic is in favour of the NDA. Chances too are bright to impose president rule and conduct assembly polls, which is scheduled for March 2005, under president rule.
There are reports that a number of RJD MPs, MLAs and MLCs who had been denied party ticket to contest Lok Sabha elections are in constant touch with the JD (U) leaders. Are you aware of it?
Yes. A number of MPs and MLAs are in regular touch with the leaders of JD (U) and they have expressed their desire to join the party at an opportune time. Let the date of assembly elections draw close. You will find exodus of Rashtriya Janata Dal MLAs and MLCs.
