The incident took place in front of a mosque near Dhobi Ghat across the petrol pump located on Thornhill road. The victim had dropped his two children at Little Hearts School by his car and had come to a tea stall near the mosque to get diesel filled in some of his trucks at the petrol pump.
He was reportedly talking to his younger brother Akhtar, nephew Ansar and some others when a Maruti 800 car reached there. Two men identified by Akhtar as Mannu and Sohrab got down, hurled a bomb at Nanhe which hit him and then shot him twice with a rifle. Nanhe collapsed on the spot, said Akhtar. The assailants sped away towards Rajapur. There were reportedly two other persons in the car used in this murder but Akhtar could not identify them.
Stunned onlookers left the spot to avoid police questioning. However, Akhtar provided important clues.
Later, Akhtar lodged a named FIR against the alleged killers Mannu resident of Pratapgarh and Sohrab belonging to Sultanpur. Both are said to be contract killers. Akhtar also named Hamza, nephew of Samajwadi Party MP Ateeq Ahmad, and two railway contractors Brajesh Jaiswal and Idris alias Babboo Thekedar as the three main persons who, he alleged, had their hand in this murder. Complaint against the three was lodged under section 120B (aiding and abetting crime).
The cause behind the murder was a sleeper loading contract worth over Rs 2 crore which the deceased had bagged some time ago. Hamza had asked the victim either to give him a cut of Rs 15 lakh or hand over the contract to the two railway contractors Brajesh and Babboo. But Nanhe Khan had rebuffed Hamza, alleged Akhtar. This denial became the cause of his brother's murder.
Hamza was given the 'supari' by the two contractors. In turn Hamza contacted the killers to eliminate Nanhe Khan, alleged Akhtar.
