The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has earmarked Rs 250 crore for the upgrade.

The new system will refurbish the currently used radio trunking system which is a relay system of communication, personal protection equipment, and multiple communication radio system of communcation called MPT1327 among others.

The multiple radio system will be of use keeping in mind the city’s vertical development, which fire officials say brings in unique problems while dealing with disasters.

“Many a time while we are operating in high-rises, communication can happen at only one specific spot. If we change our position even a bit, communication goes for a toss,” said Wireless In-charge Officer Nitin Raut. He further added that the communication system would help save time and energy in times of eventuality.

“We want to bring the fire brigade on par with other nations by upgrade communication system to minimise response time,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Kishore Gajbhiye.
