Justice JM James dismissed the bail application after Director General of Prosecution PG Thamby strongly opposed it on the grounds that the accused was an influential man with alleged connections with the underworld.

Rahman'' release at this juncture would adversely affect the investigation as some other accused were still to be nabbed, he observed.

Rahman's counsel, on the other hand, contended that there was no need for further detention of the accused as all the ornaments alleged to have been stolen from the tantri had already been recovered and investigation has almost been completed.

Bachu Rahman, who had been absconding for more than two months, had surrendered before the police on October 3 following a directive from the High Court.
