Safety Inspector held in the Boat Tragedy case

Police on Thursday arrested the chief inspector of boats for issuing a sea worthiness certificate to the boat which capsized in Thekkady lake on September 30.

Police on Thursday arrested the chief inspector of boats for issuing a sea worthiness certificate to the boat which capsized in Thekkady lake on September 30.

Chief Inspector of Boats, M Mathew, was arrested, a senior police officer investigating the case said.

Forty five persons, mostly tourists from outside the state, had drowned after the ill-fated boat 'Jalakanyaka' overturned in the lake near the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki district.

Earlier, police had arrested the steerman and a subcrew in connection with the mishap.
