Sensing victory after a gap of 13 years, he told his workers, “Wait till I am given the winner’s certificate. My victory margin will be the largest ever of over 2 lakh”. It was 2.24 lakh. He polled the maximum number of votes for any candidate in India.
And, he waited for three hours in the media room, attending congratulatory calls and asking for the national update. As it emerged that the Congress and its allies will form the government, Sajjan supporters had a new question — will ‘Bhai Sahab’ become a Union minister? There were some hope as some prominent Jat leaders like Balram Jakhar had lost.
When he was declared winner at 4.30 p.m., he decided to rush straight to 10 Janpath. In between he stopped at the Sai Baba mandir at Najafgarh to offer his thanks to the deity.
The BJP had accepted defeat long before. All counting agents of Sahib Singh Verma had left the centre by noon. Verma himself sensed defeat in the first hour of counting at Pitampura. He left home without turning up at Jharoda Kalan.
Promises: To be ever ready to fight for the cause of the people who go to him with their grievances.
