‘Sarabjit’s death penalty not valid as his name isn’t in FIR’

The death penalty awarded to an alleged India spy Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan by a special anti-terrorist court and upheld by the Pakistan Supreme Court, had no substantial basis, as convict’s name does not even figure in the FIR. Disclosing this to the media Sarabjit’s lawyer Avaid Sheikh said he had hopes from the review petition filed before the court. HT Correspondents report.

Disclosing this to the media Sarabjit’s lawyer Avaid Sheikh said he had hopes from the review petition filed before the court.

With previous lawyer of Sarabjit failing to appear, the Pakistan Supreme Court had, earlier, pronounced ex-party judgment upholding his death sentence awarded by a lower court in a case of serial bomb blasts of 1990.

Sheikh said simultaneous efforts were being made to seek clemency for Sarabjit through a mercy petition to Pakistan President Asif Alai Zardari.
