In Kanpur City alone, cash transactions worth Rs 30 crore did not take place while cheques worth Rs 70 crore could not be cleared.

The strike was supported by the All-India State Bank of India Officers and Staff Association. A public meeting was held at the main branch of SBI, Mall Road.

Addressing the gathering, vice-president of the Kanpur region KK Agarwal said Central Government and all banks employees other than SBI were getting pension on the basis of 50 per cent of the last drawn salary being computed as basic salary for pension.

However, the SBI employees are being given pension on the basis of 1992 pay-scale and family pension on the basis of 1987 pay-scale, Agarwal said.

“Owing to this gross injustice, the SBI employees and their family members are facing financial loss,” Agarwal said.

He pointed out that the SBI had a corpus of Rs 8,800 crore in its pension fund while the bank has to bear only an additional expenditure of Rs 180 annually after increasing the pension money.

He urged the employees to make the all-India strike a success so that the SBI management and the Central Government could be compelled to accept their demand.
