Sealing Timeline

Thwe drive starts in Delhi on March 23 after SC's February 16 order to begin sealing illegal properties.

How It All Started

MCD had sealed a residential property being used for commercial purposes. The shopkeeper moved Delhi High Court, saying MCD did not have powers to seal properties.

MCD then went to Supreme Court, asking for powers for the same. A petition on illegal commercialisation of residential colonies was clubbed with MCD's petition and SC asked MCD to seal all illegal properties.

The order came on February 16 after which the sealing drive started on March 23.

Highlights of Sealing Drive

March 24: Court constitutes a monitoring committee under the leadership of Bhure Lal to monitor sealing drive.

May 14: Tejendra Khanna committee constituted on February 14, 2006, submits report on mixed land-use

June 2: MCD starts desealing properties, completes exercise by June 29.

August 1: Supreme Court is furious, asks “what was the government doing for the last 20 years?”

September 1: MCD starts sealing unprotected categories of unauthorised development.
