Sensex closes Thu 24 pts down

Late selling by funds and retail investors drag the BSE index down to 11,699.05 after an early buoyancy on Thursday.

Late selling by funds and retail investors reversed an early rising trend as the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark, Sensex, on Thursday lost 24.87 points to end at 11,699.05.

The 30-share sensitive index touched a high of 11,763.36 points and a low of 11,675.08 points during the day in choppy trade.

Similarly, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty ended down by 16.45 points down at 3,413.90 after moving between 3,452.30 and 3403.65 points during the session.

Stock brokers said squaring up of outstanding positions by funds and other players in view of expiry of August contract in the Futures and Option (FandO) segment major players mainly led to a fall in the stock prices.

The major losers were stocks of metals, oil and gas, auto and Capital goods segment, pushing the benchmark index in the negative zone.

Metal, capital goods and oil&gas shares were prominent losers due to heavy selling pressure in the sectors.

The trading volume remained low at Rs 2,774.44 crore. RIL continued to be the most active scrip with highest turnover of Rs 155.05 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 86.85 crore), Zee Telefilms (Rs 65.50 crore), Reliance Comm (Rs 64.42 crore) and Tech Mahindra (Rs 64.03 crore).

The broad-based BSE-100 Index fell back by 26.10 points to 5,933.77 from previous close of 5,959.87 points.

The BSE-200 Index and the Dollex-200 were quoted modestly down at 1,398.68 points and 503.18 points at close compared to last close of 1,405.69 and 503.18 respectively. The BSE-500 Index dipped by 24.11 points to 4,423.88 from previous close of 4,447.99 and the Dollex-30 ended lower at 2,064.90 from 2,069.52.

RIL dropped by 11.65 to 1117.60, Tata Steel by 10.40 to 496.20, BHEL by 21.75 to 2260.95, Grasim by 6.90 to 2253.50, L&T by 20.40 to 2401.05, Satyam Computer by 11.45 to 808.20, Tata Motor by 8.30 to 845.15, Maruti Udyog by 1.35 to 861.40, ONGC by 5.70 to 1215.90, Reliance Comm by 5.25 to 299.65, SBI by 1.65 to 930, Wipro by 8.05 to 517.90, ACC by 12.85 to 909.65, Bharti Tele-Venture by 2.95 to 411, GACL by 2.25 to 112.35, HLL by 1.50 to 234.60 and NTPC by a rupee to 124.20.

However, ITC moved up by 3.90 to 191.25, ICICI Bank by 1.85 to 596.50, TCS Ltd by 11.95 to 996.05, HDFC Bank by 12.90 to 853.15, HDFC by 6.00 to 1308.35, Infosys Tech by 9.95 to 1808.80, Ranbaxy by 2.25 to 406.80 and Bajaj Auto by 9.60 to 2697.50.
