Watson came into the Australian set-up 12 months ago and has made the all-rounder's berth his own.
He was Australia's outstanding performer at the under-19 World Cup in 2000, top scoring in five of his six matches.
And although a repeat performance is unlikely in the senior event, he will play a vital role in an otherwise highly experienced line-up.
He has all the shots in the book and, with the ball in hand, he bowls with real aggression and pace.
That all-round ability is supplemented by his close fielding around the bat.
Another factor in his favour is that one of his biggest admirers is his state and national captain, Ricky Ponting.
