A judge took just five minutes to dismiss an appeal by the Camden Council against a decision that it had been guilty of racial discrimination. A relieved Sikh solicitor Rajwinder Singh had earlier won his petition against his summary dismissal by the council charging it with racial discrimination. But then the council had appealed against the decision.

The judge, Sir Micahel Burton, president Employment Appeal Tribunal, along with two colleagues heard the argument by the council's barrister for two hours, but took only five minutes to reject council's appeal. Last February Rajwinder Singh had been awarded £25,000 damages by an Employment Tribunal when it found he had been "bullied and harassed" by his boss in the council's legal department.

The tribunal had named the boss, Richard Gruet, and the council guilty of racial discrimination against Singh and also found the council guilty of his unfair dismissal. In a second hearing the Tribunal ordered the council to pay an additional £10,000 towards Singh's legal costs because the council had acted "unreasonably in conducting the proceedings".
