The West Bengal government said that the farmer, Prasanta Das, had not collected the compensation cheque though it was ready.
The body of Das, an inhabitant of Khaserbheri village, which is part of the project site, was found hanging from a tree on Friday morning, the police said.
Das was one of the members of the Trinamool Congress-backed anti-displacement Krishi Jomi Bachao Committee and had not taken the compensation from the government, its convenor Becharam Manna said.
Das was suffering from depression since his land was taken away for the project, Manna claimed
Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee paid a visit to Das' home to comfort his bereaved family in the evening.
"The Tata Motors project is not in the interest of farmers. The suicides prove it," she said after spending 10 minutes with Das' family members.
In February, another farmer, Haradhan Bag, whose land had been acquired allegedly without his consent, had also committed suicide at Singur.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata, Home Secretary PR Roy said, "the cheque was ready for payment of compensation for the land acquired, but the man did not collect it".
Roy said that the state government was awaiting the post mortem report.
