Tension gripped Ghoti's Buddha Vihar area on Wednesday when unidentified persons desecrated the statues leading to protests and stone pelting against the incident, prompting police to heighten security in the area, they said.
Five platoons of State Reserve Police were deployed to assist local police.
Commercial establishments remained closed yesterday in Ghoti and a morcha was taken out by Republican Party of India (Athavale faction) led by its State Secretary Priya Kirti Tribhuvan to tehsildar and police station, demanding arrest of the culprits.
