Six more succumbs to encephalitis; toll touches 521

Six more children succumbed to encephalitis here during the last two days, taking the toll due to the deadly disease in eastern UP to 521 since early this year, an official said.

Six more children succumbed to encephalitis here during the last two days, taking the toll due to the deadly disease in eastern UP to 521 since early this year, an official said on Thursday.

Two children died on Tuesday while four succumbed on the following day at BRD Medical College here, Additional Director (Health) L P Rawat said.

Fifteen new cases have been reported from various government hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti divisions during the last two days, he added.

A total of 2978 patients suffering from Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome were admitted this year at various hospitals in the region out of which 521 have died, Rawat said.

He said 96 patients suffering from the disease were undergoing treatment at BRD Medical College while nine are admitted in government hospitals of adjoining districts.
