PMK leader S Ramadoss on Monday asked AICC President Sonia Gandhi to 'advise' Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna to implement the distress sharing formula and release Cauvery water accordingly.

"In the larger interest of the nation and Tamil Nadu, you (Sonia) will advise the Karnataka Chief Minister to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu forthwith,"he said in a statement.

He said Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had traditionally been sharing Cauvery water for agricultural purposes. However, in the recent past, Tamil Nadu had found it difficult to receive its due share, as stipulated in the original agreement.

Though the Krishna government last year refused to release water to Tamil Nadu on the ground that there was no water in Karnataka reservoirs, the reality was that there was abundant water in dams in that state. Farmers there had raised two crops in rotation and sugarcane as the third crop, he said.

Consequently, the farmers in Tamil Nadu, especially those in the tail end areas, could not raise even a single crop.

With the Kuruvai planting season approaching, farmers should have received some Cauvery water by now. But Krishna was resorting to 'recalcitrant tactics' and refusing to release water, he added.
