They make an interesting combo. Kyunki mom-in-law and daughter-in-law work in tandem beautifully. Nina Aggarwal and bahu Shibani Aggarwal have been showcasing exquisite Maharani jewellery in the city for the past seven years.
“I owe my creative prowess to my mom-in-law. It is she who has been designing jewellery for the past 26 years,” says Shibani. A trained designer, Shibani has also studied creative writing in Edinburgh.
Jennifer Lopez has picked up chunky large earrings from the duo and so did Liz Hurley. “Apart from celebrity clients, what makes us even more proud is the award for craftsmanship that our design of earrings called Au-Tremble –where the petals actually trembled – won at the India International jewellery show in Mumbai. The piece was later picked up by Madeleine Albright,” says Nina.
The duo’s latest exhibition was held at the Intercontinental, Parkroyal recently.
Shibani loves to design earrings that are large and chunky. And she looks to Hollywood for inspiration. “If I ever get an opportunity to design for Cameron Diaz, I would love to design a bikini held together by a bold, round diamond clasp,” she says.
What about the perennial saas bahu disagreements? “These are all sorted out. We have our departments to look after and the discussion on the dinner table is usually about my son Aryaman,” says Shibani, married to real estate entrepreneur Alok Aggarwal for the past seven years.
The best part of being a jewellery designer, says Shibani, is fulfilling the
fantasies of the client.
“Sitting with a client I can design a piece of jewellery according to her taste. I also help her choose the best article that needn’t necessarily be the most expensive one,” she adds. No wonder even the Royal Family of Kuwait has been bedazzled by the jewellery.
