IT WILL be a Diwali with a difference at the Adarsh Karagaar (Model Jail) this time. All 238 inmates belonging to different religions will light diyas (earthen lamps) together at the Sarva Dharma Park, being developed on the jail premises.
For starters, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian symbols — Om, Crescent Moon, Ek Omkara and the Holy Cross – will be illuminated at the park on the occasion of Dhanteras on Thursday.
“This Diwali celebration is aimed at fostering communal harmony among the inmates. The Model Jail aims to reform inmates. The current move will encourage all of us to celebrate festivals together in a congenial atmosphere,” said senior superintendent, Model Jail, Suresh Chandra.
An inmate Ramu Kashyap sculpted an idol of Bharat Mata for this park. The idol faces the religious symbols there. Kashyap also made an idol that was installed for Durga Puja in the jail.
A special roza iftar party would be organised for the inmates, irrespective of their religion, on the last Friday of Ramzan on October 20, Chandra said.
An Eid-Milan programme was also scheduled for Eid, the official added.
