Criticising the proposal for 27 per cent reservations in higher education students took out a procession on the campus today. AU student leaders Abhishek Shukla, Samar Bahadur Singh, Vijay Dwivedi, Anand Singh, Shirish Dubey and Irshad Ullah led the march.

Speaking against the proposal Shukla said reservation in higher education would allow undeserving candidates to make into institutions of repute. “This will have an adverse effect on the industries,” he said.

Shukla said a nation-wide stir would be launched against the proposal. He said a meeting on the matter was conducted at the Diamond Jubilee hostel and the inmates assured to support to the protests.

Student leaders affirmed that they were determined to protest against the reservation policy. However, they welcomed the proposal of Sonia Gandhi to increase the number of seats.

Those present on the occasion were Sanjay Pandey, Prabhat Rai, Akshay Singh, Dr Brij Gopal Singh, Jitendra Shukla, Sanjeev Dixit, Rahul Singh, Parmanand Dwivedi, Sudhir Pandey and many others

Meanwhile, the All India Students Association (AISA) held a meeting to discuss the 27 per cent reservation proposed by the central government. AISA leader Ashutosh Mishra said reservation was not the only way to bring down the social dissimilarity in the country. Reservation would benefit the deserving candidates besides it would also provide an opportunity to undeserving candidates.

A meeting was also held at the Sir Sunder Lal hostel against the proposed reservation. Student leader Samar Bahadur Singh said reservation should be based on the economic and educational status of the candidate. Reservation in higher education would lead to decline in the standard of education.

Singh urged the HRD Minister to do a rethink on the proposal. He threatened indefinite stir in AU if their demand was not met.

On the other hand, several AU students hailed the quota move. AU Students’ Union president Ajit Kumar Yadav and several other student leaders congratulated the HRD Minister and the Central Government. Yadav said those against reservation were agents of capitalists and feudals.

Student leader Pravesh Singh Yadav also congratulated the HRD Minister on the issue.
