THE BIG fat political wedding is coming to town. Riding in on a special fully air-conditioned train, a 200-car cavalcade and a 4,000 strong baraat contingent likely to include Lalu Yadav, Salman Khurshid and Digvijay Singh as well as dozen odd ministers, past and present.

Even as memories of the Holkar nuptials linger in public memory, the City is preparing for another wedding gala this time between political bluebloods.

Sapna Singh, daughter of State Congress representative and Dhar district treasurer Balmukund Gautam, will tie the knot with Shashi Bhushan, son of former Lalitpur (UP) MP Sujan Singh Bundela at a lavish ceremony to be held at IDA grounds near Sayaji Hotel.

As one of the groom’s uncles is a BJP MLA while the other is a minister in the UP Government. Representatives of the entire political spectrum are likely to attend the wedding. In all nearly 15,000 people are expected to attend the grand betrothal, which has the entire City agog. “A special 24-bogey train carrying nearly 3,000 baraatis will arrive from Lalitpur tomorrow morning at 7.30 am. The remaining guests will arrive by road in nearly 200-odd cars.

The baraat procession, accompanied by Rajasthani folk dancers, will then proceed to the Mangal Residency from where they will be taken to various hotels, guesthouses and private residences where they are being put up before being ferried back to the marriage venue in the evening,” revealed the bride’s uncle Rampratap Singh Gautam, who is overseeing the wedding arrangements.

Gautam revealed that the bride and groom would be seated on a 90 feet by 40 feet stage fronted by an artificial lake containing ducks as well as fish. A scintillating fireworks display by nationally renowned experts Mohd Akram and Mohd Aslam has also been arranged for the wedding.

“The fireworks have been designed in a manner that they will display the visages and names of the bride and groom as well as their parents upon being set off,” informed the organiser.

Although he refuses to divulge the menu, Gautam says a lavish wedding feast comprising both vegetarian and non-veg fare will be hosted for guests at the IDA grounds spread over three lakh square feet.

Preparations for the wedding have been underway for the past fortnight and a grand shamiana complete with chandeliers and buffet tables topped by bamboo canopies have already been erected at the venue. Large floral gates and more than 100 banners welcoming the bridegroom’s entourage have been strung en route from the station to the hotels, he added.

“Union Ministers of State for Agriculture and Personnel Kantilal Bhuria and Suresh Pachori have already confirmed their attendance and Union Railways Minister Lalu Yadav and UPCC chief Salman Khurshid are expected to do so by evening,” revealed the bride’s uncle. Former Chief Minister and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, MLA Laxman Singh Gaud, City Congress president Ujagar Singh as well as several MLAs and MPs from UP are also slated to participate in the wedding.
