But no serious damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The 6.2-magnitude quake was centred in the Pacific Ocean, 20 kilometres east of Taitung county, at a depth of 12 kilometres, the weather bureau said.

Taitung is 250 kilometres southeast of the capital, Taipei.

The tremor, striking at 6.41 am, came as many people were still sleeping, but did not cause undue alarm on the island frequently rattled by temblors.

At least four aftershocks were registered within hours, measuring between 4.
