The decision was taken to prevent the student leaders from getting contracts for construction work in the universities. Principal secretary (Higher Education) Rajiv Kumar issued a circular to all the vice-chancellors in this regard on Monday.

A government official, requesting anonymity, said that the student leaders, who were getting contracts by mounting pressure on the university authorities, would be disappointed by the decision.

About one dozen student leaders of the DDU Gorakhpur University were involved in such construction work for many years.

Reacting to the decision, some university officials said that the government was not satisfied with the quality of work carried out by the contractors and students.

Thus, the State had decided to hand over the construction work to its agencies, they added.

Meanwhile, the State government granted Rs 17 crore for construction work at the DDU Gorakhpur University. According to sources, out of Rs 17 crore, a sum of Rs 5 crore would be spent on making the basic amenities available. Besides, a sum of Rs 10 crore was set aside to carry out other construction work, they added.

A meeting was held under the chairmanship of principal secretary (Higher Education) on June 12 in Lucknow to review the utilisation of funds allocated to universities in 2005-06.

After reviewing the last year’s performance, the Gorakhpur University was allocated Rs 17 crore, the sources further said.
