The victim has been identified as Puja, a teacher. Soon after she was found dead at her in-laws' house, Puja's parents registered a case at the Kotwali police station. They alleged frequent harassment of their daughter at the hands of her in-laws for dowry, police said.

Puja's husband Arjun works in Thailand. They were married in 2006.

Her parents alleged that Arjun had been threatening Puja that he would divorce her if she would not arrange more dowry. In their complaint to the police, the victim's family said that in the face of constant harassment by her in-laws, Puja had started living separately. But she returned a fortnight back after assurances by her in-laws.

The family also claimed that Puja had called up her brother a few days ago and had asked him to take her back to her parent's house.
