A dependable left-handed opener who can turn his arm over as an off-break bowler, Taufeeq burst onto the international scene in Pakistan's Test win over Bangladesh in August 2001, scoring the second century in the innings to become the eighth player from his country to achieve the feat on debut.

Apart from his batting skills he also is a stand-by wicket-keeper giving a boost to his demand in selection in the national squad.
