The house belonged to one Draupadi Devi, 75.
The theft took place between 10.30am and 11am when nobody was home. Devi was visiting her daughter in Haridwar, while her widow daughter-in-law and granddaughter were away at work.
The incident came to light after neighbours saw two young men escaping from the house. Though they tried to chase them, the duo managed to flee.
Devi’s daughter Rekha Arora said, “The thieves broke open the almirah and took away 10 tola gold jewellery and around R60, 000.” She said the thieves left other items unattended.
Meanwhile, neighbours caught hold of a woman moving about suspiciously around Devi’s house.
The woman was presented before the judicial magistrate on Friday and remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody, a police officer said.
