A senior police officer of the district said a complaint had been registered at Gajol police station on Tuesday against three youths, namely Sumanta Murmu, Biswajit Murmu and Sanjib Murmu, and the girls have been sent for medical test.

“In the primary investigation we found out the accused youth were known to the victims. However, on the basis of the complaint we have started a gangrape case and officers are conducting raids. But no one has been arrested yet,” said Malda police super Prasun Banerjee.

Locals told HT on January 25 that the three students went to their school to see the Saraswati idol following which they went to other pandals in Alampur but failed to return home.

The three minors were found in a semi-conscious state on Monday morning at nearby Chandandighi area.

“When the three girls were walking on the road, three youths of Majrakota area arrived in a SUV and abducted them. Then the youths took them to a secluded place at Chandandighi and raped them,” said a relative of one of the victims. This is the latest incident of barbarism in Bengal that has been in the news over the past few years for atrocities on women.
