A teacher at a private polytechnic institute allegedly hanged himself at his house here as he felt 'ashamed' after being beaten up by his students.

A teacher at a private polytechnic institute allegedly hanged himself at his house here as he felt "ashamed" after being beaten up by his students.

Police said Subramanian had scolded 20 of his students for not doing class work properly. Later, the inebriated students went to Subramanian's house, took him out in a car and thrashed him.

Subramanian had suffered external injuries in the attack.

The teacher had informed his relatives about the insult and hanged himself while they were asleep.

Police have arrested five students and are looking for the others.

A driver of the institute and his wife were also beaten up by the students, said police, adding that the motive was being investigated.
