Police suspect his death to be a case of suicide.

The 62-year-old Rajendran, who was a Rajya Sabha member as an AIADMK representative from 1995-2001, had parked his car near the new bus stand in Kovilpatti and shot himself around 6 pm, police said.

A native of Kovilpatti, Rajendran joined the DMK later and was the treasurer of the district unit of the party for a few years. In recent times, he had stayed away from politics.

Rajendran is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. After taking a sabbatical from active politics he was running a marriage hall and a bus service.

According to reports, Rajendran was under pressure as there was trouble in one of his daughter-in-law’s house and after suffering losses in a business recently.

Police have ruled out foul play and claim it was a case of suicide though the reason for the suicide is not known yet. Further investigations are on.
