Mohammad Shafi Sheikh, a top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, has been arrested by security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said on Saturday.
He was nabbed by troops of 47 Rashtriya Rifles and the Kupwara local police while trying to target security forces at village Doru-Sopore, the spokesman said.
He said the terrorist had lobbed grenades on the security personnel and was trying to take out his weapon to open fire when he was arrested. His accomplice managed to escape.
The security forces recovered 40 kilograms of high-grade explosives from his possession, the spokesman said. Four fake identity cards, including one showing him as a reporter for a local bi-lingual daily newspaper, were also seized from him.
Terming the arrest as a "prize catch," the spokesman said that the ultra was a top functionary and financial controller of the outfit.
He also used to coordinate activities of various other militant outfits active in the Handwara-Zalurah-Sopore belt in the two districts of Baramulla and Kupwara.
The spokesman said that Sheikh, in his mid-40s, has confessed to having received specialist training in handling and operating sophisticated communication equipment in Pakistan.
