The driver of the train applied sudden brake on seeing a metal sheet on the track and averted a major rail tragedy. The incident occurred late Friday night near Monrothuruth station in Kollam.

However, no casualty has been reported, the sources said, adding that the possibility of sabotage bid could not be ruled out.

The sources said the bogie got derailed due to the heavy jerk that was caused by sudden applying of brakes.

Meanwhile, senior railway officials visited the spot and passengers of the derailed train were taken to Kollam town via road.
