DEVANSHI OF Class III and Aditya of Class I were regular bunch of kids in class till a few years back. Now, they?re the maths ?genius? stars and front-row permanents right beneath the teacher?s nose! They are now able to solve sums in a jiffy and, at times, without even putting pencil to paper. Often, the answer is ready as soon as the question is completed. And, this is not just about quickie two digit sums but adding 20 digits or multiplying four-five digits in seconds.

They are now able to solve sums in a jiffy and, at times, without even putting pencil to paper. Often, the answer is ready as soon as the question is completed. And, this is not just about quickie two digit sums but adding 20 digits or multiplying four-five digits in seconds. All thanks to the UCMAS (Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System) taught at its master franchise Abacus Educational System with the use of, what else, but the abacus—a mathematics tool created 2000 years ago.
D Kumar of Abacus Educational System told HT Lucknow Live, “It is a time-tested tool to augment the faculties of the brain. Eight five per cent of the development of the human brain takes place when the child is 5 to 12 years old.
Whatever is learnt or taught during this period stays embedded in memory for long. The centre enrolls students of this age-group alone and teaches them to solve arithmetic problems with the abacus.”
“Initially the child is taught to solve sums with the help of this tool but gradually the tool is withdrawn and the child is asked to calculate the sum by using imaginary beads in his brain only,” Kumar said. According to him as the child practices, his speed, accuracy and memory get a boos. His learning abilities and concentration also improves.
Ashu Rajpal and his wife demonstrated on Saturday, the ‘magical’ impact of the abacus. A number of arithmetic sums were tossed out to a group of students enrolled at the academy. The kids solved them rapidly.
The centre also teaches the ‘picture thinking’ concept to enhance memory capabilities in kids—basis of all academic studies. Kumar said the programme is divided into 10 terms and each term comprises 12 classes taught over three months. Each classes lasts for two hours (Saturdays and Sundays). The programme duration is a total of about 30 months and does not clash with school timings. Get your kids going then!
