"We demand that the false case (of attempted molestation) foisted on the Dalit MLA be withdrawn. It is nothing but a clear case of political persecution," TDP MLAs Nagam Janardhana Reddy, M Narasimhulu, S Venugopala Chari and Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu alleged at a press conference in Hyderabad on Monday.
Kovvuru MLA Rama Rao, who runs a nursing college in his native Nidadavole in West Godavari district, was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department officials and produced before a local court in Eluru. He was arrested based on a complaint lodged by two girl students of the nursing college that the MLA attempted to molest them.
He was remanded to judicial custody till August 3.
As Rama Rao complained of uneasiness he was referred to the local government hospital in Eluru and subsequently taken to Vijayawada on the recommendation of doctor.
"A case was filed alleging that the MLA was involved in rape and murder of nursing student. A high-level inquiry by the West Godavari District Collector and Superintendent of Police established that no such crime had taken place. But still the government handed over the case to the CID only out of political vengeance," the TDP MLAs said.
