Armed men kidnapped the two brothers, sons of a businessman, in Begusarai town, 126 km from Patna, said a police official, suspecting ransom as a motive for the abduction.

The abducted children, aged eight and 10, are students of the DAV school in Begusarai.

"The police have alerted all check-posts and police stations to trace the children," the official added.

The Patna High Court ordered the Bihar government earlier this month to search for the state's 143 missing children, mostly abducted in the last five years, and submit a report within six weeks.

According to a state government affidavit submitted in the court, 1,076 children were abducted in the state since 2001. Only 8,889 have returned or recovered by the police.
