Ujjain tension: Section 144 imposed, five held

A day after tension erupted in Chattri Chowk area of Ujjain, police arrested five people and registered case against 37 people involved in stone pelting and brawl. Section 144 has been imposed in four police station areas.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been imposed in four police station areas including Mahakal, Jiwajiganj, Kharakua and Kotwali and administration has ordered closure of all the educational institutions till situation normalises. Shops in the area remained closed on Tuesday. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) conducted flag march in the tension prone area.

Ujjain superintendent of police Anurag informed that police registered a case against Lala Rangrej, Gabbar, Abrar, Mujeed Supariwala, Adik, Saeed and Khalique. Apart from this, cases against 30 unidentified miscreants were also registered at different police station.

Jiwajiganj police arrested Abrar, Javed alias Gabbar, Shammi, while Kharakua police station arrested Shahbaj and Naddim. Earlier, in the morning state education minister Paras Jain visited district hospital and inquired about the health of those who were either injured in stone pelting or in lathi-charge by police.

On Monday evening, trouble started when some people belonging to a particular community opposed playing of loud music during the idol immersion procession near Jama Masjid area, under Jiwajiganj police station. When people participating in the procession ignored their protest, somebody started pelting stones on the procession.
