India has been a favourite destination of not only the British holiday industry, but also of thousands of British students who choose to experience the sights, sounds and smells of India during a gap year.

Most of them return thrilled to bits with the experience but some also find India unpleasant.

British TV network ITV is now set to explore the thrills and perils of backpacking in India through a new drama series in which two friends go to India and only one returns.

The series, titled 'Losing Gemma', will soon go into production and shooting in India. Based on a first book by novelist Katy Gardner, the series is set against a backdrop of India's top tourist destinations.

Holby City actress Rachel Leskovac plays Gemma, a needy girl who is thrown together with hardened travelling partner Esther (Alice Eve), when their mutual friend is forced to pull out of a planned trip to India.

Adapted by Robert Murphy, the two-part thriller will soon start a six-to-eight week location shoot in Goa, Delhi and Agra.
