ROTARY FOUNDATION trustee and Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force chairman Robert S Scott said the world was looking towards Uttar Pradesh for eradication of polio. “If we win the war against polio here, then we can eradicate the disease from the world,” he said.

Talking to mediapersons here on Saturday, Scott said 17 polio cases were reported in India. Uttar Pradesh topped with 12 cases, followed by Bihar with 5 cases. Five cases were reported from the Kundarki block in Moradabad district alone.

He said, “Eradication of polio requires four basic factors that include good routine immunisation, ability to get vaccines to the children, organisation of the national immunisation days and enough funds to run the drive.”

“We hope to eradicate polio by next year. To achieve the goal, regular review of the drive and independent auditing is being done by Rotary International,” he said.

Resistance to polio drops was not over and several rounds of the immunization drive had turned parents wary.

They often raised objection when vaccinators visited their homes to administer polio drops to children.

Scott, along with India National Pulse Polio Committee chairman Deepak Kapur, held talks with Family Welfare Minister Ahmed Hasan.

Various religious leaders were present at the meeting. Rotarians urged religious leaders to raise awareness among members of their communities.

Expressing concern over the outbreak of fresh polio cases, Scott said not only was polio crippling children in UP and Bihar, but also the poliovirus was also being exported to neighbouring countries by the migrant population. Scientists have traced the origin of the poliovirus in China and USA to Moradabad.

Kapur said polio cases were reported both among Hindus and Muslims.
