The calm and quite Urmila Singh has been regarded as one of 'very good' Congress leaders from among the desciplesof Congrss veteran Arjun Singh.

Born on August 6, 1946 at village Dhurwada in Seoni district, she has been actively involved with politics from an early age. A graduate in arts, she has been associated with the development of the tribals, in particular.

Urmila Singh was first elected to the state assembly from Dhansaur constituency in 1985 and was re-elected in 1993. She was inducted into the Digvijay Singh Cabinet as a minister of state and was later elevated to the rank of a cabinet minister in 1995. She has been entrusted with the Social Welfare department.

She was elected as president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on July 8, 1997. Urmila Singh was re-elected to the state assembly in 1998 and was re-inducted as a cabinet minister by Digvijay Singh.
