US lacks understanding on Taiwan: China
China may be preparing to deal with its dispute over Taiwan through other political means.Updated: Feb 09, 2006 22:08 IST
China on Thursday criticised a senior US official for his lack of "through understanding" on the vexed Taiwan issue but said Beijing was resolved not to allow the cash-rich island's bid for independence.
Reacting sharply to principal deputy US undersecretary of defence Ryan Henry's remarks that China may be preparing to deal with its dispute over Taiwan through other political means as it increases its offensive military power, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said Henry's comments showed he lacked "through understanding" of the Taiwan issue.
"He does not understand China's position on the Taiwan question," Kong said while noting that Chinese President Hu Jintao had emphasised four points on Beijing's stand on resolving the reunification issue.
Kong noted that Hu, also General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), had said the Chinese mainland would persist on the 'One China' policy, stick to the peaceful efforts to reunify China, rely on the Taiwanese people to realise national reunification and would not give-in to 'Taiwan independence' activities.
"The US official should have a thorough understanding on our position on the Taiwan question," the spokesman said.
Henry had described as "disconcerting" China's military modernisation, which he said looked as if Beijing was preparing for something other than a political resolution to the vexed Taiwan issue.
