Police opened fire in Raikia area of Kandhamal district on Tuesday evening, in which one person lost his life.
On Monday, the police had arrested two persons in connection with last month’s riots and brought them to Raikia police station. On Tuesday afternoon, nearly 500 women surrounded the police station and demanded their release. After talking to them for close to three hours, the police finally persuaded them to call off their agitation.
However, they returned in the evening to resume their agitation in a more strident manner. And this time, they started pelting stones at the police station.
The police initially tried to disperse the crowd by lathicharging them but when that didn’t work, they opened fire at the crowd, injuring one. The injured person was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where he was declared brought dead.
Satyabrata Sahu, divisional commissioner of southern range, told Hindustan Times, “One person died. He was brought dead to the hospital in Berhampur. A post-mortem will reveal the exact reason of his death. Two others have also been injured. But they are out of danger now.”
Additional reinforcements have been rushed to Raikia and the district administration is keeping tight vigil on the law and order situation in the area.
