We are building ghost cities while housing still remains a dream

This refers to the report 62% of India’s new housing vacant (September 23). It is appalling that a housing policy for the common man is given the least priority by governments at the Centre and in the states. Even if a project sees the light of day, its implementation rema-ins caught up in bureaucratic tangles. Only property builders and rich people are able to purchase multiple flats which they later sell off and thus push real estate prices up. We are just building ghost cities with housing still remaining a dream for many. The latest land acquisition row in Noida exten-sion and how rules were tweaked to house the elite in the Adarsh society show that the government is least bothered about providing housing facilities to the middle class and the poor.

Tonic for an ailing economy

This refers to the report PM tells nation: Trust me on reforms, I will deliver (September 22). On a day the UPA’s second largest constituent, the Trinamool Congress, walked out of the government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh very aptly infused confidence in the minds of the people who have become increasingly wary of economic reforms. It’s time we realised that structural reforms will benefit us in the long run though they may appear to hurt us in the short run.

No room for Chinese whispers

The editorial, Expect trouble a little later (Our Take, September 21), has rightly advised New Delhi to be ever cautious of the Chinese dragon breathing fire while staking its claims on territories which it calls its own as Japan is finding out in the case of the Senkaku Island. It’s time New Delhi sends out a loud and clear message to Beijing to stop staking territorial claims over parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
