To check smuggling of liquor into the city, the district excise department along with the police has launched a week-long drive to nab liquor smugglers.
The police arrested two liquor smugglers from Junaidpur area on Friday night. Nearly 3,550 quarter bottles of Haryana-made smuggled liquor were recovered from their possession. Six persons were also arrested with 10 cartons of smuggled liquor on Thursday. Nearly 500 quarter bottles had been stuffed into the cartons.
“Liquor is cheaper by 30 to 40% in Delhi and Haryana compared to UP. Due to this, liquor mafias try to smuggle it into Noida and Greater Noida from these states,” Kuldeep Yadav, district excise officer, told HT on Saturday.
“Vigil has been intensified on the Delhi-Haryana border. The drive will continue even after this week-long campaign,” Yadav added. “The raids were conducted by a team comprising inspector Karunendra Singh, Upinder Singh and MP Singh,” he said.
“We won’t allow liquor to be smuggled from other states, not even for home consumption. If a resident is caught doing so, same charges will be pressed against him as are for liquor smugglers,” said Yadav.
