When Alag really means different
Subi Samuel tries to break the B'wood convention with his production venture, finds Deepti Kaul.india Updated: Jun 01, 2006 14:34 IST
It is difficult to believe Bollywood citizens when they proclaim that their film is hatke and different. But Subi Samuel’s production venture, Alag, surely looks different from the rest.
Subi is introducing a bald hero in an industry that is obsessed with looks and candy floss love stories. Further, the hero suffers because of his 'super powers’. Seems like Subi has taken the title too far.
The film stars Akshay Kapoor and Dia Mirza in the lead roles. Kapoor was earlier seen in the college-romance, Popcorn Kaho Mast Ho Jao. Post-Parineeta, Dia Mirza also looks fresh and promising in this alag venture.
The film releases this weekend.
"This film is based on a new subject. It unfolds the story of an 18-year-old boy with super natural powers. I play the role of Purva Rana who is studying psychology. She helps this guy,” says Hyderabadi beauty Dia.

Elaborating on her role in the film she says, “My character in the film is sensitive, observant and strong. She respects people. She helps this guy to adapt to the ways of the world.”
Alag surely looks different from Bollywood films where the hero is a cross between a Greek God and Super Man. The hero here doesn’t even have eyebrows. He wears boring check shirts.
Will people like this new avatar of the Hindi film hero? Director Ashu Trikha is quick in answering, "We are talking about a character who hasn't stepped out of his house for eighteen years. He will certainly look different from the others.”
Akshay Kapoor is defiantly on cloud nine. "I couldn’t have got a better film than this," he says. Though initially he was a little hesitant of the bald look.
Dia, however, is impressed with this concept. "Finally, people have guts to experiment and show their creativity," she says.
Will the audience like to see their hero suffer? Will the bald Akshay Kapoor make a mark in the industry ruled by chocolate boys? Will the box office be kind to a story that shows the dark side of possessing super powers? These questions will surely be answered this Friday.
