The usual ‘movement’ by senior faculty around the V-C office was not witnessed on Saturday. It is usual to find them hanging around to get some or the other work done even during the duty hours. However, the campus was rife with speculations about new V-C Prof Hari Gautam and who among the faculty members would be the closest to him.

It may be mentioned that the new V-C has no prior connections with the KGMU but he knows some of the faculty members personally as he has interacted with them when he was Banaras Hindu University V-C and University Grants Commission chairman.

Prof Gautam is going to join KGMU next week and there’s still time for that. The point to note is that outgoing V-C Prof Agrawal would still remain Faculty of Medicine Dean for at least the next three years.

Thus, even if the faculty wants, they cannot ignore him and this is well-known to Prof Agrawal.

“The big question is development of the campus and to take the level of education higher along with patientcare. If stern action is taken by the new V-C, he could take KGMU places,” Prof Agrawal commented.

In his short term of two months, Prof Agrawal has to his credit some major decisions, including the extension of OPD hours and formal documenting of university statutes that were pending for over an year.

What remains is proper implementation of the extended OPD hours and proper monitoring of private practice by senior faculty members. This major job would now be the challenge the new V-C is going to face.
