Why training programmes fail

Man has defied complete understanding ever since we know of ourselves. We have proved ourselves to be successful in areas which were considered to be impossible some time back.

Man has defied complete understanding ever since we know of ourselves. We have proved ourselves to be successful in areas which were considered to be impossible some time back. We have developed eyes to peep into distant future and have developed capacities to predict the time and speed of many events with almost unfailing accuracy. We have dared and won in the physical world but the battle is yet on, on winning the man over.

As gestaltists said, ‘the whole is more than the sum of its parts’. This seems to be a absolute reality when we talk of training programmes for personnel. Otherwise said human resource development of all the resources that nature has endowed us with, human resource is the most elusive in nature. The examples can be found almost everywhere. The number of bestsellers that we print of self-helps books should have by now eradicated the earth of any problem related to human behaviour we find the contrary. The problems related to human psychology are increasing multi-dimensionally.

The idea is not to paint a gloomy picture but to understand the ‘whys’ of failures in training programmes for personnel. The reason and purpose of identifying the dynamics of not-so-successful projects is to understand the vulnerability factor, which becomes the ‘waterloo’.

As per Maslow, there are five basic psychological needs, which guide our behaviour. They are–
(i) Physiological needs (primary)
(ii) Safety needs
(iii) Love and belongingness needs
(iv) Self-esteem needs
(v) Self-actualization needs

He feels that we evolve through steps. For proper evolution and development we have to master all steps, maintaining the hierarchy.

If we try to dodge any of the steps, evolution and growth process will not progress well.

If an employee is experiencing domestic violence i.e. her safety and security needs are not getting fulfilled she can never be able to identify or feel belonged to the organization and hence will not be able to deliver her best.

Unless Maslow’s hierarchical model is used to assess the trainees, training programmes will keep witnessing failures or partial successes.
