Gupta, who secured an all India rank of 182 in the JEE Mains 2018, developed a medical problem that required surgery, but he decided to postpone the surgery and took painkillers to continue his studies for the exam. “About 20 days before the JEE Main exam, I got to know that I have a fistula due to which I was finding it difficult to sit during my coaching classes,” said Gupta, a student of Allen Career Institute, Chandigarh. A fistula is an abnormal connection between two hollow spaces such as blood vessels, intestines, or other hollow organs.

Doctors at the PGI Chandigarh examined him and suggested surgery for the problem, a few days before the JEE Main exam, which was scheduled on April 8.

However, Gupta decided to postpone the operation. “I was in severe pain, but cracking JEE Mains was much more important than my pain. So, I decided to bear it,” he said.

Gupta took painkillers and studied for around 10 hours a day. He scored 305 marks out of 360 in JEE Main examination. After taking the examination, Gupta underwent the surgery on April 16.

After the operation, it was not possible for him to sit for nearly a month. So, Gupta studies for the JEE Advanced, scheduled on May 20, while lying down.

Gupta has given his Class 12 examination this year.

He has secured the 21st rank in the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) . He is also a scholar of the National Talent Search Examination. His father Shankar Gupta is a real estate broker and mother Renu Garg is a manager at an insurance company.
