Rebuked by the invigilator for cheating in an exam, a class 6 student jumped to her death from the terrace of a six-storeyed building here on Thursday.
She was rushed to private nursing home nearby but she had died by then. Aparna Mishra was a student of St Dominique Savio School in Howrah town. The school is run on the first floor of a residential building.
The local Golabari police detained Brijkishore Prasad, the accused teacher and Dilip Kumar Dubey, the secretary of the school. But they couldn’t decide what section to slap against Prasad though Aparna’s father insisted that be booked for abetment of suicide."The accused teacher told us he caught the student cheating, took away her answer script and asked her to start writing afresh. The student apparently wanted to go to the toilet but instead went to the terrace and jumped," said Rashid Munir Khan, additional deputy superintendent of Howrah city police.
“My cousin committed suicide because she was humiliated by the teacher who, after scolding her, threw her out of the classroom. We also want to know how a school could function from a residential complex? There was no guard at the school and no one noticed her when she went to the terrace,” said Ajay Tiwari.
The police also questioned students in Aparna’s class. “During our grilling, some students said they noticed Aparna cheating,” said a police officer.
“Now we are trying to lay our hands on the evidence — the piece of paper from which she was copying — to verify the statement of the accused teacher,” the officer said.
“On hearing the thud of the body hitting the ground, the locals took her to a private clinic. The school authorities said they did not notice anything. We are verifying their statement,” the police said.
